Dos Almas De Espana

The Music

  • I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You
(Theme from The Mask of Zorro)
  • Leyenda
(Asturias) - by Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909)
This song is built around the flamenco from Granainas. It’s title comes from the northern mining province of Spain. It was composed originally as part of the Suite Española. Isaac Albeniz once told Francisco Tarrega that he preferred Tarrega’s guitar transcription over his own on the piano.
  • Romance
    (Spanish Ballad) - Anonymous
An anonymous piece that is at least two centuries old. It was written as a waltz and is sometimes heard as a rumba today.
  • Andalucia
    by Ernesto Lecuona
Played here with an underlying compas (rhyhm) of the traditional flamenco bulerias, originating in the south of Spain in a region known as "Andalucia".
  • Recuerdos de la Alhambra
    by Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909)
Written one evening in Granada in 1896 after an afternoon visit to the 14th century palace. It was titled "A la Alhambra" (Invocation) in the hand-written manuscript, but was published as it’s world renowned title, "Recuerdos de la Alhambra".
  • Adagio from "The Concerto de Aranjuez"
    by Joaquin Rodrigo (1901)
The most popular guitar concerto ever written beguiles the listener with it’s evocation of the ancient palace of Aranjuez and colorful pageantry attendant to the Spanish courts. This piece was written in Paris during the Spanish Civil War.
  • Capricho Arabe
    by Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909)
Written in Barcelona about 1890 while playing his 1888 Don Antonio de Torres guitar (Spruce top with Rosewood back and sides). This song evokes the sounds of the Laud and Bandurria Rondallas (Spanish folkloric mandolin ensembles) that fills every province of Spain.
  • Andante and Rondo #3 from Trois Rondo Brillants Op. 2
    by Dionisio Aguado
Written in Spain, but published in Paris by Chez Messionnier in 1825 shortly after Aguado’s arrival to begin concertizing in the city of light. One of Aguado’s truly virtuoso early works.
  • Homenaje de Sacromonte - Granainas
    by Anthony Arizaga
The flamenco form from Granada with it’s Moorish arabescos is a delineation of the group of songs known as Fandangos Grandes.
  • Corazon Profunda - Siguiriyas
    by Anthony Arizaga
The most gypsy of all flamenco songs; nothing is more emotional than a Siguiriyas.
  • La Tristesa - Peteneras
    by Anthony Arizaga
The flamenco song of legend ~ Once upon a time there was a very beautiful lady of the evening who loved to destroy men’s hearts, who befell her own tragic end at the hands of one of her cast off lovers.
  • La Leyenda de Juan Breva - Malagueña
    by Anthony Arizaga
This musical style, originally developed by Juan Breva (1843-1918) and named after the province of the port city Malaga, was popularized by Ernesto Lecuona in the late ’50’s.
